As a teacher, it was a bit funny to see spelling conventions used as a crucial part of a joke (the soldiers&#8217; joke in response to Kerry, I mean).

<p><a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6284926">Developments since that time</a>: Some teams/colleges have been able to get the blessing of the specific tribe that they are names after (Fighting Sioux, for example).</p>
<p>This story really takes the cake, though. Apparently, the McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, has decided to drop its mascot completely! All the cheerleaders and fans can yell is &#8220;Go Team!&#8221;</p>
