Ever wish you could rip a certain scene from a DVD to your hard drive? (Maybe you want to have easy access to it; maybe you want to embed it in a PowerPoint presentation.) Handbrake will help you do just that.
1. Put in your DVD, and it will search the catalog of the DVD (ie where the scenes breaks are).
2. Select which one you want to rip (save to your hard drive).
3. Set Handbrake to work, and soon, you’ll have your file on your desktop, ready to use without your DVD.
Some applications for video might include the following:
Find scenes in movies that show features in literature that might be relevant to your curriculum. (have students search their own home DVD’s for these, and they’ll do more “homework” than you can imagine!) Find scenes in movies that relate to content in other subjects. Having the precise clip as a file on your computer is much more convenient than having to navigate your DVD menu every time you want to use a clip.
Handbrake describes itself as, “an open-source, GPL-licensed, multi-platform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.”
Be aware of copyright and fair use, though. This is not free license to copy and mass-distribute media we don’t own…but that’s a conversation for another time.
