NCAA mascots restriction – the ongoing saga

Written on October 20, 2006 – 3:31 pm | by Ed Warkentin

I blogged earlier about the ongoing saga of the requirement NCAA teams not be named for any Native American-esque words (Indians, Savages, Redskins, etc.)

Developments since that time: Some teams/colleges have been able to get the blessing of the specific tribe that they are names after (Fighting Sioux, for example).

This story really takes the cake, though. Apparently, the McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, has decided to drop its mascot completely! All the cheerleaders and fans can yell is “Go Team!”

Listen to the story. it’s pretty amusing.
