FPU Tech Fest ‘06-Day 1

I am a university professor now! Well, I’m co-teaching 1 course at Fresno Pacific University. Whatever that makes me, that’s what I am. It’s a real pleasure to be doing this. It’s exciting to be talking about blogging, podcasting, and other technologies with teachers.
We’ve gotten everyone set up with a professional blog on edublogs.org. We are reading Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms by Will Richardson; we’ll have reading homework every night on it.

We’ve started a wiki where we’ve introduced ourselves to each other, have started to write our thoughts on all of these topics (blogs, wikis, podcasting, etc.) There is a page for each of these topics which has become a sort of KWL chart: we have written things we Know, things we Want to know, and toward the end of the week, we’ll be write things we have Learned! An old, tried-and-true practice meets 21st century tools!

It’s exciting to meet teachers that are in different teaching situations, teaching different subjects, etc. that are finding different ways to use these tools. It’s one thing for me to read about a certain way to use blogs, imagining if I ever were to teach that subject & grade. It’s another when I have that teacher sitting with me talking about using it with their students this next year!

We’ve talked about del.icio.us (which is the tool I’ve used to send the students to lots of good examples of blog articles),

and will be getting Bloglines accounts to help us manage the blogs that we want to keep up with…
